Winter Mountain Leader Training - Days 5 & 6
The plan for days 5 and 6 was to go on a two day expedition into the Cairngorms National Park spending a night in a snow hole and to do some night/poor visability navigation.
Day 5
The first day was glorious, next to no wind and the sun shining. We headed in Coire an t-Sneachda and made our way up the goat track (grade 1 gully). From here we headed across the plateau to Garbh Uisge Beag where we spent the next few hours digging our snow holes.
At 4.30pm we left the comfort of our snow holes for the summit of Ben Macdui to watch the sunset. Following this we spent a few hours navigating at night on the plateau and returned to the snow holes for our evening meal and a warm sleeping bag.
Day 6
We woke up on day 6 to find that the weather forecast had been correct. The weather turned overnight with complete white out conditions and 25-30mph winds. This made for great navigation practice on the walk back out to the to the coire cas car park via spot height 1141m and the Fiacaill a' choire Chais.
Once back at Glenmore Lodge we had time to sort our kit and get a brew before group and individual debriefs.
Thanks to all the staff at Glenmore Lodge for a fantastic course, now to start the long drive back to Somerset.
