Winter Mountain Leader Training - Day 3

Day 3 of the Winter Mountain Leader training and the emphasis was safety on steep ground. The venue for today was Coire na Ciste.

We started on the north easterly facing side of the coire on some steep compact snow where we looked at digging bucket seats and backing them up with buried ice axes to build belays. We tested these by bringing each other up and down the slope and dynamically arresting those who took a fall.

After lunch we moved over the the slopes on the other side of the coire which had a north westerly aspect. Due to the recent weather conditions the snow was a lot softer over there, this made a great venue for learning more about Snow bollards and stomper belays. The last hour out on the hill was spent digging a variety of avalanche inspection pits and discussing their importance

Another chilly day today with very little sun and less wind finished off with an evening lecture on what to do between training and assessment and what's expected.
